Our Story

Four decades of love, land, and donkeys.

Where it began

Rooted in the Georgia land since 1982

Amberwood Sanctuary was founded in 1982 in Leary, Georgia, born from a simple conviction: that donkeys who had been overlooked, neglected, or left behind deserved a safe haven of their own.

What began as a small act of compassion on quiet acres of Baker County land has grown into a lifelong home for the herd. Rooted in the soil and shaded by Georgia pines, the sanctuary was built for the animals who needed care the most.

A Special Place for Donkeys.

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong homes for donkeys in need. Every animal who arrives is met with patience, medical care, and the promise that they will never have to leave again.

How we care

Safe Haven

Open pasture, clean shelter, and quiet acres where every donkey can finally feel safe and settle in.

Lifelong Care

Rehabilitation, veterinary attention, and daily devotion for as long as each animal lives. No exceptions.

Community

Volunteers, donors, and neighbors who share the load and make lifelong care possible, together.

Come Meet the Herd

Our gates are open to those who want to see this work up close. Come walk the pastures, meet the donkeys, and discover how you can be part of their story.
